Literacy in the Community

Living in a college town, literacy looks slightly different here than in other places. There are flyers posted on campus about different concerts, philanthropies, and sports teams. There are always different posters of the IU athletes on signs and light posts as well. This type of literacy is important for my community because it keeps people updated on events and activities coming up. Although we have the IDS newspaper, not every student has access to it or reads it every week. Flyers are the biggest way for individuals or teams and groups to get their word out to other people.

As for more world-wide literacy, social media such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter are also a form of literacy in my community. These types of media help individuals stay connected with their friends, family, and colleagues. This is an extremely important form of literacy to keep people connected. Facebook can also be used to read news articles, whether it be national news or local, which keeps people updated on the world around them.
